Drug Action Coalition - Restorative Justice Program

After months of planning, the Restorative Justice Program is just about ready to launch! Facilitators have already been trained, and will begin receiving files in Summer 2007. This innovative approach to victim healing and alternative justice is based on the Family Conferencing Model, acknowledging the need for support for both victim and offender. Criteria to qualify for this program are strict: first time offense, drug related crime of a less serious nature, non-violent crime, and the offender must show true remorse. The victim must be in total agreement with this solution, and has the right to decline the process at any time, which results in the offender being directed back into the standard court system. The offender must also complete his or her contract agreement established by both victim and offender during the conference process, or the file gets redirected back to the standard court system. Restorative Justice Programs have shown to be very effective and successful worldwide, as there is greater shame and remorse for an offender when facing his victim, as opposed to standing in front of a judge in a courtroom. The typical conference scenario would see feelings of anger and confusion from the victim turn to understanding and forgiveness. The relief of guilt and shame when allowed to apologize and accept responsibility is often the result for the offender.

Currently EDDAC has four trained volunteer facilitators for their Restorative Justice Program. If you are interested in becoming a facilitator, contact EDDAC at 712-0243 or email E_DDAC@yahoo.ca.

Volunteers are always needed! Join one of EDDAC's committees or call for information on becoming a volunteer facilitator for the Restorative Justice Program!
